Recent Works: A New Chapter in Color and Storytelling

Art Sherwyn’s most recent body of work fuses vibrant color palettes with his deep love for storytelling. Infused with calligraphic mark-making and expressive gestural lines, each painting resonates with the spirit and character of the people and places that inspire him. These works serve as visual anecdotes, celebrating the essence of the communities he calls home.

Launched in 2018, this evolving series has challenged Sherwyn to explore new scales, materials, and visual techniques, pushing beyond the boundaries of his 40-year practice. Yet, the signature energy of his linework remains—a fluid thread connecting subject and emotion, structure and spontaneity.

Urban Inspiration Meets Creative Intuition

Inspired by the revitalization of Bakersfield’s urban core, Sherwyn spent months walking the streets with his sketchpad, searching for fresh compositions. These initial drawings became the seeds of larger works—small color studies in the studio transformed into bold, expressive paintings.

Sherwyn intentionally distorts scale and perspective, challenging viewers to see the familiar in new ways. Each piece is built on a foundation of deliberate structure—but once the composition is in place, intuition takes over, guiding color, shape, and rhythm in a spontaneous dialogue between artist and canvas.

The Uncommon Path

As an educator and creative thinker, Sherwyn often speaks about “The Uncommon Path”—a mindset that embraces experimentation, discovery, and artistic freedom. Whether used strategically or instinctively, this philosophy infuses each work with a sense of movement and emotional depth, highlighting the enduring power of art to tell stories, provoke thought, and illuminate the human experience.
