Information Sheet and Supply List for Quaking Aspen Art Retreat with Art Sherwyn

Plan on arriving at the destination on Friday, between 11:00 and 11:45; we will start promptly at Noon. You only need to bring a sketchpad and pencil to this session; keep your supplies in your car. During the first hour we will get to know each other, set the tone of the retreat, discuss some learning theories, and take care of the business items. Please plan on paying the remainder of the tuition during this time. This will also be the time when those taking the retreat for units will fill out the paper work and pay the tuition.  I am not able to accept credit cards, so please make arrangements to pay by check or cash. Supply List

This supply list is to help you prepare for the myriad of artistic experiences you will be involved in. If you have any particular mediums or materials you want to experiment with that are not on this list, feel free to bring them. We will be exploring many avenues of artistic expression, from the contemporary to the realistic approach.

Supplies:

1. Easel; sturdy, portable and adjustable. French easel is perfect if you have one. If your easel does not have a shelf or drawer, you will need to bring a light weight TV tray type table to place your materials on when we are outdoors. I will bring a few extra easels for those in need.

2. Sun protection; hats, light weight long sleeve shirts and lotions.

3. Folding chair; light weight

4. Sketchpad; White drawing paper for thumbnail sketches and studies. 8” by 10”

9” by 12” or 11” by 14”.

5. Newsprint, 18” by 22” Sketch pad or paper;

6. Soft drawing pencil

7. Small hand held pencil sharpener

8. Conte’; Soft black, 2 sticks, (I will bring extras for those in need).

9. Pastels; I use prismacolor Nupastel, 96 colors. If you have another brand or type, bring them.  Nupastels will last through many works of art and studies, and will always remain fresh no matter how old they become. I will bring extra sets.

10. Fixative for your studies in pastel, charcoal, ebony pencil, etc.

11. Pastel paper; Canson pastel paper, middle tone color (blue-gray, gray, or brown), or brown butcher paper for studies. The amount of paper depends on your preference for working in pastel. If you are exclusively pastel, I would suggest about 3 to 4 sheets per day. Other options include; water color paper, hot press (smooth surface) 140 lb., or sanded pastel paper. If you feel like working on rich paper, sanded pastel paper is one of your best options. It’s best if you can get it in a toned color of tan or light gray. Bring some cheap grades of paper for practice and studies.

12. Drawing board; One that will affix to your easel, and large enough to handle a full sheet of 15×30 drawing paper. The drawing board should have several sheets of newsprint or any other paper of your choice that will pad the board.

13. Clips and or large rubber bands; bring plenty to hold down your paper. We will be assured of some wind at times.

14. Scissors or matte knife

15. Pastel pencils; 1 or 2 pencils in the middle tone colors, ie. reddish brown, gray or dull blue. Used to layout drawing.

16. Acrylic paints; I will share some techniques in acrylic. I use only primary colors, (red, yellow and blue) plus black and white. If you like acrylics and/or want to learn more about them, plan to bring some to the retreat. I will have extra paint.

17. Oil paints are optional. You can choose to use them on the 2nd half of the 2nd day or the 3rd day. If you have a preference of colors, bring them. Plan to bring the accessories you use, including, brushes, mediums, turpentine, palette knives, palette and canvas.

18. Rags or paper towels

19. Container with a lid that can hold one quart of water or more.

20. Small water container for cleaning brushes as you paint.

21. Plastic bags to contain trash while on location. Market bags are perfect.

22. Wet wipes
