Lamont Library Mural Project

One of the most rewarding projects I have ever been involved with was the creation of a mural in the children's section of the Lamont Library of the Kern County Library system. It was a project that I was hesitant to accept because I have not had any appreciable success making children's art. (Scroll down for more writing on the Mural Project.)

The process is what sets this mural apart from most, because it is essentially a collage. Using old discarded children's books, maps, sheets of music, torn paper and a host of other materials for my palette. I created a mural that is textural, eye catching and thought provoking. Lamont is a small farm community. The theme of the mural is based on the idea that reading books can take you anywhere you want to go. From the skies to the oceans, from the big cities to the small towns, a book can transplant your mind and soul to any edge of our existence. As the girl is reading to her brother, the pages lift off the book and turn into birds that guide the way for the two children to explore new lands. The mural took three and a half months to complete, working most every night between 6Pm and 2 AM. It was a challenge that almost destroyed me, yet it became a blessing because I learned a tremendous amount in the process.
